Benefits of Gas Logs

Confused about gas logs? You don’t need wood logs for the ambiance of a wood-burning fire. It’s possible with gas logs!

If you’ve only just learned about the option of making the switch from a wood-burning fire to gas logs, or if you’ve been debating about making the swap for a while now here are six benefits of gas logs to consider.

Convenience

Gas logs offer a large-time saving element to your routine. First, these appliances can be equipped with a remote control, or a switch, or even a thermostat. They can be turned on simply with the touch of a button or a wall switch. You will save time and be able to relax with your feet up, in the time it would normally take to ignite a wood fire, and stoke the flames. Gone is the need to leave the house to collect firewood. Gas logs can burn evenly for as long as you desire without the need to get up halfway through your evening to get more wood to fuel the fire.

Realistic Appearance

A common misconception about gas logs is they don’t look reals. But the logs, which are made from a ceramic fiber or refectory cement mixture that will withstand extreme heat, are formed from molds created from real tree branches. The ceramic logs are then painted with such intricate details to make them closely resemble the real thing.

You also have a wide range of design options when it comes to gas logs. Styles include various wood types, including oak, aspen, or birch. You can get a mixture of full logs and split logs. And you can even look at charred gas logs that look like they have been simmering in the flames for hours, reaching a crisp coal color on their edges.

Cost-Effective

Overall fueling your fire with natural gas will be more cost-effective than purchasing firewood. Gas is also more efficient in burning, so you will need less fuel to receive the same levels of heating in your home. If you choose a ventless gas log set, it also eliminates the need to get a chimney cleaning each year.

Mess-Free

When lugging firewood into your home there is always the possibility the wood will bring all sorts of dirt, wood chips, bark, and bugs into your home. While the fire is burning smoke will not enter your room, and there will be fewer smoky odors. Finally, whereas wood-burning fireplaces will need the ash cleanout of them regularly, gas fires require no such post-fire clean-up.

It’s Eco-Friendly

According to the EPA, gas fireplaces produce fewer emissions than wood-burning fireplaces while producing the same amount of heat.

Safer Than Wood-Burning

A wood fire always has the possibility of sparks flying, or a burning log rolling out of the fireplace after the collapse of the woodpile mid-fire. Especially if you have kids or a dog wandering around the house, there is a risk they may get too close to the flames. A set of gas logs also means less smoke in your home, which will be a healthier option for people suffering from lung conditions, severe allergies, or asthma.

Safety Precautions for Gas Logs

Although gas logs are a safe option, there are safety precautions to take, as with any time you are dealing with fire. It is a good idea to get a carbon monoxide detector installed in your home, just in case, when you are considering getting gas logs. It is also important to get an inspection every year to check for gas leaks and repairs needed for your fireplace.

When you are looking into getting a set of gas logs do your research on the differences between vented gas logs and ventless gas logs to decide which is better for you and your home. Some states and cities don’t allow or have restrictions on owning a ventless gas log set. Also, remember gas logs are made to be placed into pre-existing wood-burning fireplaces NOT to be placed in pre-existing gas fireplaces.
